It's only appropriate that a celebration of the first total solar eclipse in the southeastern United States in 47 years be accompanied by live music from "The Dark Side of the Moon."

While Pink Floyd will not be touring in Oak Grove or anywhere else next August, tribute band American Floyd will kick off The Total Solar Eclipse Experience, a three day jamboree that Oak Grove Tourism Commission Director Traci Cunningham called "one huge Christian County festival."

Mark Hawkins, lead vocalist and guitarist for American Floyd, promises a show like no other.

"It's going to be the best show they've ever had," Hawkins said. "And they've had some good ones."

The 10-member band, whose members are mostly from Clarksville, specializes in the elaborate live experiences that helped draw big crowds for Pink Floyd, including a light show and the building of a wall.

"You can close your eyes and you think you're actually listening to Pink Floyd," Hawkins said.

The band leader said given the occasion, they'd almost certainly play the entirety of "The Dark Side of the Moon." The performance will last about two hours.

The show has some extra weight for American Floyd. Hawkins said the band got its first gig at the Viceroy almost a decade ago.

"We're really looking forward to it," he said. "I love that venue."

While few plans are finalized, the festival will encompass War Memorial Park and Valor Hall Conference and Event Center. It will begin Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, with the concert and laser show. It will conclude two days later with a viewing of the total eclipse from the berm of the Viceroy Performing Arts Center.

"We want visitors to have something to do while they're here," Cunningham said. "There will not be any lack of activities."

The commission will be giving away viewing glasses for the eclipse, and attendees who book a hotel in Oak Grove will be given a bag of souvenirs.

"It's going to be kinda cool," Cunningham said.

"It's going to be really cool," Hawkins said.
